During reconstruction, carpetbaggers were supporters of the Democratic party who were eventually elected or appointed to new state governments. They were called carpetbaggers because they always carried around their belonging in bags made of carper fabric. The scalawags were white Southerners who worked with the Republicans to support the constitution. They were a diverse group who were former Whigs who had joined the Democratic Party against their will before the war.
